The Sinners of Hell / Jigoku
Nobuo Nakagawa | Japan | 1960 | 101 minutes
A student has a ‘friend’ who is pure evil. They are out driving one night and hit a man, whom they leave for dead. The student and other sinners are then plunged into hell.
Beginning with titles where an avant-garde jazz piece plays over images of the credits projected onto a woman’s naked back and buttocks Nobuo Nakagawa’s oft-remade film still packs a punch a half-century on thanks to both content — sinners being sawed in two and other Dante-esque images — and his masterful formal technique.
One of the films from the box set we can work through.
