Pépé le Moko (Pepe-Le-Moko)
Julien Duvivier | France | 1937 | 94 min | French with English subtitles | Rated PG
Pépé le Moko (Jean Gabin) is the ‘prince of plunder’, wanted on two continents but safe from capture if he stays within the notorious and labyrinthine Casbah district of colonial Algiers. He meets a gorgeous Parisian tourist, Gaby, and they fall in love. Algerian inspector Slimane tries to use her to attract Pépé out of the Casbah in order to catch him.
“Pépé le Moko is full of sinuous camerawork, dingy sets, deep shadows, and even darker motives, this is also the film that fixed Gabin’s image…as the outsider condemned to a life in the underworld. Film noir as we know (and love) it is just around the corner from here.” (Time Out)
“Populated by fascinating characters and with a tough sensibility, this is pulp noir at its finest and way ahead of its time.” (Empire)
